Penn State is set to hire one of the most popular players in school history, Trace McSorley, to its staff.
Nittany Sports Now can confirm what Penn State AD Pat Kraft hinted at during THON Saturday night: McSorley will be reuniting with his college coach, James Franklin, on staff at Penn State.

NSN has also learned that McSorley’s position will be an analyst in the QB room, which shouldn’t be a surprise because, well, McSorley was a pretty good QB at Penn State.
McSorley was a three-year starter before turning pro and finished his time at with 9,899 yards, 77 touchdowns, 25 interceptions and a 144.5 passer rating.
TRACE IN THE NFL
After McSorley’s college career ended, he spent time in the NFL.
The Baltimore Ravens selected him in the sixth round of the 2019 Draft.
McSorley has since spent time with the Ravens, Cardinals, Patriots, Bears and Steelers. McSorley spent the 2023 preseason with the Patriots before being released in late August. He was then out of football for almost two months before the Bears signed him in late October.
He spent three seasons in Baltimore and two more with the Arizona Cardinals. He saw the most extensive playing time of his career in Arizona last year, when he appeared in six games, completing 45 of 83 passes (54.2%) for 412 yards (5.0 yards per attempt), no touchdowns, five interceptions and a 42.8 passer rating.
His most recent stop was with the Washington Commanders, who he spent two weeks with in the 2024 preseason.
Now, his playing career isn’t officially over— McSorley’s only 29, after all— but his coaching career is beginning.
