Penn State football’s next two games against Michigan just got a lot more interesting: Bryce Underwood is going to be a Wolverine.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday evening that the No. 1 overall prospect in the Class of 2025 has flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan less than two weeks before the early signing period begins.
Breaking: Bryce Underwood, ESPN’s No. 1 overall recruit in the Class of 2025, is flipping his commitment to the Michigan Wolverines, he told school officials today.

The fact that Schefter— who usually breaks the NFL’s biggest stories— broke this one should be telling as to how big a deal this is.
Also telling is that Dave Portnoy, Michigan graduate and Barstool Sports founder and owner, said he would donate $3 million to get Underwood to Ann Arbor. Whether Portnoy followed through on this is unconfirmed but Underwood is coming to the Big Ten.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR PSU

JJ McCarthy and the Michigan offense stare down a loud Penn State student section.
Penn State doesn’t play Michigan next season but does in 2026 (in Ann Arbor) and ‘27 (in Happy Valley). If Underwood is close to as good as he’s projected, he’ll be onto the NFL after the 2027 season. The impact that this has on the entire Big Ten could be huge. Michigan has started three quarterbacks this season, so it’s fair to say the program lacks stability at the position. If Underwood delivers, Michigan won’t have that problem again for a while.
UNDERWOOD AND PENN STATE
Penn State was one of the many, many schools that offered Underwood but it got closer than most. As recently as September 2023, Underwood took a visit to Penn State, seeing the team’s 31-0 White Out demolition of Iowa. Penn State also made the final seven for Underwood’s commitment. Underwood committed to LSU in January 2024 and visited Baton Rouge as recently as two weeks ago, attending the team’s game against Alabama. It initially looked like Michigan would fail to land him, but things changed.
PSU takes on Minnesota Saturday at 3:30 on CBS.
