The College Football Playoff Committe is getting criticized by a well-known analyst for having Penn State ranked so high.
Tuesday night, the latest college football rankings were released on ESPN and the decision to have PSU at No. 4 isn’t going well with a big voice in college football.
SEC advocate Paul Finebaum appeared on ESPN’s ET up this morning and as usual, didn’t hold back, in particular with the ranking of Georgia and Penn State.
In the latest rankings, the playoff committee has Penn State ranked No. 4, while the Georgia Bulldogs come in at No. 12. If that would hold up, Georgia wouldn’t be included in the 12-team playoff, which didn’t go over well with Finebaum.
“You have to start by saying that what the committee said last night was a complete travesty,” said Finebaum. “There’s no getting around it. I know they work hard. They sit in a room at a five-star resort ordering caviar and champagne and sit around and talk about college football when they have 4,000 members to look at. So, I don’t know how they came up with these numbers. Georgia started the season against Clemson, which has been ranked in the top 10 at the time. Their road schedule has been the toughest of anyone in the country. They went to Alabama, Texas, and Ole Miss. They’ve also went to Kentucky, which is very poor, but they (Kentucky) did beat Ole Miss, which is ranked inside the system.”
“(Georgia will) play Tennessee this weekend and if they win, they’ll probably end up back in the committee’s good graces, but how the committee can disrespect them and put schools like Penn State? Are you serious? What has Penn State done this year? Do they even have a – their most impressive win, I think, was at Southern Cal, a five-loss team. There’s no justification for it. I know I’m getting excited because there’s still three weeks to go, but how can you not be outraged at what we heard?”
Penn State’s only loss this season was to Ohio State and (PSU) have a win against a team in the committee’s Top 25. Looking at their schedule, Penn State’s best win came against Illinois (6-3). PSU have not had to play two of the best teams in the Big 10- Oregon and Indiana, and won’t in the regular season.
