It wasn’t as easy as many expected, but Penn State got the job done against Illinois, winning 21-7 at Beaver Stadium.
The 17.5-point favorites badly outshined Illinois but never put the Illini away until late.
Illinois got the scoring started with a 61-yard scoring drive that took 5:24 and ended on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Luke Altmyer to Carson Goda.
Penn State answers right back with an eight play, 75-yard scoring drive that took 4:02 and ended on a 3-yard TD run by tight end Tyler Warren, set up at quarterback.
The teams each missed a field goal and went into the half tied at seven.
Penn State drive 74 yards in 6:16 to begin the second half, retaking the lead on a four-yard touchdown run by Nicholas Singleton, with Warren again serving as the wildcat QB.
A late touchdown run by Kaytron Allen sealed it.
Penn State’s next game is against UCLA at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon on FOX.
