First-year coach Mike Rhoades’s program is a finalist for Mitchell, along with Arkansas, BYU and Oklahoma State.
Like Penn State, Arkansas made it to the NCAA Tournament last season, advancing one round further than Penn State by upsetting No. 1 seed Kansas in the Round of 32.
Mitchell (6-foot-5) averaged 17.3 points per game for UMKC last season, being named second-team all conference.
The Roos finished 11-21.
Mitchell played against some Power Six competition last year: LSU (15 points), Illinois (five points), Kansas State (zero points) and Oklahoma (18 points). Mitchell’s season-high took place in a win over Toledo Nov. 21 at home. He scored 35 points, shot 7-for-9 from the field, 3-for-4 from 3-point land and 18-for-20 from the free throw line, adding six rebounds and playing 37 of 40 minutes.
Before Kansas City, Mitchell, a Blaine, Minnesota, native, played at Idaho (2018-19), Otero Junior College (2019-20) and the University of Illinois-Chicago (2020-21). He sat out the 2021-22 season and played this past season at KC.
At Idaho, he started 10 of 31 games as a freshman, averaging 4.4 points, and then moved to the JUCO ranks for a season.
In the COVID-themed 2020-21 campaign, Mitchell started eight of 16 games for UIC, upping his PPG to 8.3. This past season, he finally broke out and became UMKC’s leading scorer.
Mitchell entered the portal earlier this month.
Mitchell would be the seventh player to come to the school in this portal cycle if he picks Penn State. Penn State and its new coach, Mike Rhoades, have landed six transfers thus far. A-10 Player of the Year Ace Baldwin and Nick Kern came with Rhoades from VCU. 6-foot-8 sharpshooter Zach Hicks came from Temple. Pittsburgh-area native Puff Johnson returned to PA after three seasons at North Carolina, and, most recently, 6-foot-11 Qudus Wahab came in from Georgetown. Most recently, Lafayette transfer Leo O’Boyle signed. Like Mitchell, O’Boyle will be entering his last season of eligibility.
