Most Penn State fans don’t like Urban Meyer.
It’s probably fair to say that football fans generally don’t like Urban Meyer.
But Penn State fans might like Meyer’s comments about Beaver Stadium and Penn State’s fans.
“I’m telling you,” Meyer, now an analyst on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff show, said, “this stadium (Beaver Stadium) is the toughest stadium in college football to play in.”
The crowd gathered outside Beaver Stadium, where this week’s kickoff show is for the first time, was glad to hear it.
Meyer knows well how tough it is to play at Penn State.
In Meyer’s seven seasons as Ohio State’s head coach (2012-2018), his teams came to Happy Valley four times.
Yes, Meyer’s Buckeyes won three of those four games. But all of them, aside from the 2012 meeting, were decided by a touchdown or fewer.
The most famous game Penn State and Ohio State played in Meyer’s tenure happened in 2016, when Marcus Allen’s blocked kick and Grant Haley’s subsequent touchdown return propelled Penn State to a shocking 24-21 win over the No. 2 Buckeyes. Two years later, Penn State almost beat Ohio State again in Beaver Stadium but coughed up a 26-14 fourth-quarter lead and fell 27-26.
In 2014, Penn State came back from a 17-0 halftime deficit to tie it at 17 and force overtime but eventually fell 31-24 in double OT.
Ryan Day succeeded Meyer as head coach in 2019 and is 3-0 against Penn State. Penn State will look to get its first win over Day and second win over Ohio State since 2011.
