Rickey Gibson, a Class of 2023 defensive back from Hewitt-Trussville High School in Alabama who is a four-star recruit according to On3’s consensus rankings and three-star according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, has narrowed his choices of schools down to three, and Penn State is one of the three.

Penn State, along with SEC schools Georgia and Tennessee, are in the hunt for the 6-foot-1, 175-pound corner. Penn State offered Gibson in late June.
Before this summer, Penn State hadn’t had a player from Alabama commit since 2014. This past June, it got two in less than a week, with four-star EDGE Tomarrion Parker and four-star safety DaKaari Nelson both picking Penn State.
The lone 247Sports crystal ball projection, placed by Director of Football Recruiting Steve Wiltfong, has Gibson picking Georgia, which is coming off its first national championship since 1980.
Penn State has had two of its commits— offensive lineman Joshua “Doogie” Miller and receiver Yazeed Haynes, both three-star recruits— flip to Georgia.
Gibson discussed his recruitment with Ryan Wright of Rivals.com.
“I wanted to play in the Big Ten when I was a kid,” Gibson said. “The coaches at Penn State seem great. I can see myself developing under them.”
Penn State currently has five defensive backs committed to its 2023 class. Of the five, three-star Lamont Payne is a corner, and four-star Elliot Washington is expected to play corner in college.
The other three— four-stars Nelson, Conrad Hussey and King Mack— are safeties.
According to Rivals, Gibson is hoping to commit before the start of his senior season.
