Penn State had to close out its 28-25 win over Washington in Seattle Saturday without its starting left tackle, and coach Matt Campbell explained why after the game.
Penn State Survives Washington for Biggest win of Matt Campbell Era
Heading into Saturday, Malachi Goodman showed up on the Big Ten’s availability report, although he was listed as “probable.“
As expected, Goodman played Saturday.
But during the second half, Garrett Sexton took over at left tackle.
WHAT CAMPBELL SAID
“Really, that was kind of what went into that with Malachi: he was not at full strength, and you know, I think we knew he would be able to give us some, how much could he give us, and Garrett really had a great day of practice. So I thought of Garrett; I thought he did a really good job. I think it would be great to watch the videotape, but it wasn’t anything Malachi did. It was just his physical health.“
GOODMAN’S IMPACT
Coming into the Washington game, Goodman, a redshirt freshman, had started all eight of Penn State’s games and, per Pro Football Focus, had played the most snaps of anybody on Penn State’s offense at 505. Goodman’s pass-blocking efficiency rating is 97.4 per Pro Football Focus, which is quite good. He’d given up just 13 pressures and 11 hurries in all of his snaps.
The next man up, Sexton, who had played just 45 snaps this season, with 14 coming in Big Ten play.
It remains to be seen if Goodman will be available for Penn State’s next game, which will be against Minnesota at Beaver Stadium Saturday, Nov. 14. Kickoff will be at 7 or 7:30 on a network to be determined.
