Penn State is down in its recruiting of Kemon Spell but maybe it isn’t out yet.
Per a report by Steve Wiltfong of Rivals.com, Spell is still committed to Georgia and has scheduled his next visit to Athens.
But Penn State is “working to stay alive” for the five star, as are Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans and, wait for it, James Franklin’s Virginia Tech Hokies in this recruiting battle
Spell and Franklin, of course, have a history.
Franklin was the first college coach Spell committed to, doing so in August of his sophomore year at McKeesport High School. Spell remained committed to Penn State until two days before Franklin’s firing last October.
Spell has offers from schools such as Florida, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Notre Dame, Pitt, Syracuse, Tennessee, UCLA, USC, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

WHAT SPELL WOULD MEAN
If Spell re-commits to Penn State, which, to be clear, still seems like a long shot for now, it would be not just the biggest get of the Matt Campbell era, but the one of the biggest in Penn State history. The word “generational” tends to get overused, but as far as Western PA products go, Spell fits the mold. He’s the No. 6 player in the country from his class per the Rivals Industry Rankings, as well as the No. 1 running back in the land and the No. 2 player in Pennsylvania, behind OL Maxwell Hiller (Coatesville), who is the No. 2 overall player in the country. Yes, any team in the country would love to have Kemon Spell.
LIFE WITHOUT SPELL
As it stands, Penn State has one running back committed to its 2027 Class, with that being three-star Chukwuma Odoh (Paramus, New Jersey). The class ranks 20th in the country per Rivals’ Industry Rankings.
