Penn State football got a late start to the 2025-26 offseason, hiring head coach Matt Campbell Dec. 5 after a coaching search that lasted nearly two months.
Taking over a program that had its recruiting class decimated and a wave of outgoing transfers — although interim head coach and current associate head coach Terry Smith managed to maintain some degree of continuity — Campbell, formerly of Iowa State, threw together the nation’s No. 66 recruiting class and No. 54 transfer class according to On3.
Penn State will reload in 2027 with one of the nation’s best recruiting classes, getting back to the standard that football fans in Happy Valley have learned to expect, but they’ll have to make it through the 2026 season to get to that point.
Campbell consistently did more with less during his time in Ames, Iowa. Between 2021 and 2025 his recruiting class never ranked better than No. 39 and averaged the No. 50 spot. Nevertheless, the Cyclones still managed to finish the season in the top 25 twice, matching the entirety of their 120-year history before Campbell. Penn State might face growing pains in year one under Campbell, but there’s still plenty of reason for hope.
Here’s PSU’s 2026 roster sorted alphabetically; position, number, class, height, weight and hometown are among the information included. Check back throughout the offseason as Nittany Sports Now completes the All 105 series.

WR/Zay Robinson/2/Redshirt Freshman/5-foot-11/189 pounds/Des Moines, Iowa
Redshirt freshman wide receiver Zay Robinson followed Matt Campbell and his staff from Iowa State, where he appeared in parts of three games during the 2025 season. A three-star recruit out of high school who ranked as the No. 10 player in the Hawkeye state and won a pair of state titles on the basketball court, Robinson instead opted to make a name for himself on the gridiron.
Parts — but not all — of the Cyclones’ offensive staff followed Campbell to Happy Valley, so Robinson’s existing rapport could help him earn playing time in his second college season… as could his ability to mix it up on special teams. His connection with former Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht, similarly, could make him a favorable target, and the duo linked up for a touchdown during the seven-on-seven portion of the Blue-White Practice in April.

WR/Chase Sowell/0/Redshirt Senior/6-foot-3/205 pounds/Humble, Texas
To paraphrase Johnny Cash, new Penn State receiver Chase Sowell has “been everywhere, man.”
Sowell started his career at Colorado in 2022, right before the Coach Prime era.
He spent the next two seasons at East Carolina, where he totaled 1,300 yards, and then, he made his way to Matt Campbell.
Sowell was one of Iowa State’s best receivers in 2025, ending the year second on the team in receiving yards, finishing 26 behind another new Nittany Lion in Brett Eskildsen.
