After five seasons at the helm for one of the most prolific basketball programs in America, Hubert Davis is out as head coach at North Carolina, and that might matter to Penn State basketball.
During his tenure in Chapel Hill, Davis compiled a 125-54 overall record with a conference record of 68-30.
This decision from the athletic administration comes after the No. 6 Tar Heels blew a 19-point lead with 14 minutes remaining against No. 11 VCU in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament on Thursday.
Even before this year, though, things weren’t up to par in Chapel Hill under Davis.
In Davis’ first year, he did lead North Carolina to the National Championship, but loss to Kansas after leading by 15 points at halftime.
The following season, the Tar Heels failed to even make the NCAA Tournament, becoming the first preseason No. 1 team to miss the tournament since it expanded.
Then the next two seasons, North Carolina was eliminated after consecutive, first-round tournament exits.
This huge development may have an impact on Nittany Nation.
Dylan Mingo, one of the most highly sought-after high school recruits in 2026 and the younger brother of Penn State’s starting point guard, Kayden Mingo, had already verbally committed to North Carolina, but is on the record for saying that Penn State was his second school of choice.
Many times after a head coach gets fired, steps down or takes another head coaching position elsewhere, the high school recruit decommits from that school and opens up his recruitment.
