Freshman goaltender Josh Fleming continues to emerge as one of the nation’s top newcomers, earning Co-Rookie of the Month honors from the Hockey Commissioners Association for his standout play in January.
The Montreal, Quebec native backstopped Penn State to a 7-3-0 record over the month, making five starts and posting three victories, including his second shutout of the season. Fleming finished January leading the Big Ten with a .952 save percentage and a 1.62 goals-against average, with both numbers ranking among the top 10 nationally.
Fleming’s recognition adds to a growing list of national accolades for the Nittany Lions this season. He becomes the third Penn State player to receive national honors, joining freshman forward Gavin McKenna and sophomore JJ Wiebusch, who were named Rookie of the Month and Co-Forward of the Month, respectively, in October.
For the season, Fleming has been one of the most consistent goaltenders in college hockey. He currently leads the nation with a .938 save percentage, while his 2.02 goals-against average ranks third in the Big Ten and is tied for eighth nationally. Through 12 starts, Fleming owns an 8-4-0 record with two shutouts.
The freshman’s rapid rise has also placed him firmly on the national awards radar. Over the past month, Fleming was named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List and earned a nomination for the Hobey Baker Award, further cementing his status as one of college hockey’s premier young netminders.
