Most of the world agrees that Penn State wrestling is unbeatable.
But “most” doesn’t mean “all,” and Olympian Austin Gomez is one person who feels Penn State can be beaten.
Gomez is familiar with Penn State, having wrestled at Wisconsin and Michigan and becoming an All-American.
After college, Gomez qualified for the Paris Olympics in 2024, representing Mexico at 65 KG.
Last night, he was one of the many watching Penn State wrestling give Iowa the worst home loss in the history of Carver-Hawkeye Arena, 32-3.
79: Penn State Wrestling Quiets Carver With Dominant Win Over Iowa
Most people watching were impressed, and Gomez was, as well.
But he doesn’t agree that Penn State can’t be beaten.
WHAT GOMEZ WROTE
“I’ll give my opinion with no connection with either teams,” Gomez posted to X.
“PSU- they are good but they are beatable. If you can withstand the hand fight and control ties you give yourself a really good chance with them and with anyone in the country.”
“Iowa: the Iowa I grew up on was looking to score 24/7 and I loved Iowa. As of lately they have been boring to watch. They didn’t give themselves a chance to win any of the matches except for a few. Keep matches close and trying to score with 30 seconds left isn’t giving yourself a chance to win.”
IS GOMEZ RIGHT?
So is Gomez right about Penn State wrestling?
It’s hard to say.
The only way it can be proven that Penn State is beatable is if Penn State loses a dual meet.
That hasn’t happened in more than six years, and doesn’t figure to be happening anytime soon.
At the same time, it’s hard to say that Gomez is wrong, especially considering he gave a blueprint for how to beat Penn State.
The next team that tries to beat Penn State, Northwestern, will compete against PSU Sunday at 3.
