A former Penn State player has made a transfer portal decision that benefits his former school.
When EDGE rusher Chaz Coleman entered the transfer portal, many assumed that Ohio State was where the Warren, Ohio, native would land.
Coleman still has three seasons of eligibility left, so he could indeed end up a Buckeye one day.
But that day isn’t today.
Instead, Coleman has signed with Tennessee, as first reported by Hayes Fawcett of On3Sports.
This outcome doesn’t directly help Penn State, since the fact remains that Coleman won’t be playing at PSU in 2026.
But it’s better for Penn State that a player of Coleman’s talent is out of the Big Ten.
The 6-foot-4, 246-pounder didn’t arrive at Penn State until the summer of his freshman season, but once he got there, it didn’t take long for him to make an impact.
By the middle of fall camp, everybody knew that Coleman was good enough to play right away, and that’s what he did, playing 22 snaps against Nevada Week 1.
Coleman ended the year with eight tackles, three tackles for loss, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and a sack in nine games.
Coleman’s efforts earned him a True Freshman Midseason All-American selection by On3Sports.
Tennessee has become a hotbed for former Penn Staters.
In picking Tennessee, Coleman will be reunited with defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, co-DC Anthony Poindexter and defensive line assistant Andrew Jackson, who all left PSU for Tennessee amid Penn State’s coaching change.
He’ll also be playing with former Penn State teammates Amare Campbell and Xavier Gilliam, who each picked UT out of the transfer portal.
The portal will run through Jan. 16.
