New York, New York— Terry Smith got a traditional celebration for his first win as Penn State football’s interim coach.
For his last win, it was a little more unique.
The Pinstripe Bowl is sponsored by “Bad Boy Mowers,” which is a company that produces, wait for it, lawn mowers.
So it was fitting that Smith got a “grass bath” instead of a Gatorade bath to celebrate Penn State’s 22-10 win over Clemson.
Smith’s legacy at Penn State was already secure before the Pinstripe Bowl but it’s always a bonus for any coach to get a win in his last game.
Although Smith won’t in the same position next season, he’ll still be with Penn State, and for new head coach Matt Campbell, keeping Smith on was a no-brainer.
“I got to meet coach Smith when he was the head football coach at Gateway (High School) and I was recruiting at the University College of Toledo,” Campbell said during his introductory press conference earlier this month. “Terry was always such an inspiring human to be around. I loved going to watch him interact with his players.”
“We loved to go recruit his players because you know if you got a great player from Terry, you knew what they stood for and it was bigger than just football,” Campbell said.
After the Pinstripe Bowl, Terry Smith called it “the greatest moment of my life.
“This game and Penn State have done amazing things for me and my family,” Smith said. “I’m so grateful.”
