Penn State football’s coaching search continues after James Franklin was fired 19 days ago.
Indiana’s Curt Cignetti and Nebraska’s Matt Rhule, two early favorites for the job, have signed extensions at their respective programs.
A Penn State alum and State College native, Rhule signed a two-year extension this week and will remain at Nebraska throughout the decade.
Florida and LSU head coaching vacancies have further clouded the waters as to who Penn State could make its next head coach.
Outclick founder Clay Travis is doubtful that Penn State won’t be able to replace Franklin with a qualified candidate.
“Who does Penn State hire now?” Travis said on Twitter. “They are likely to end up with someone way less accomplished and successful than James Franklin.”
Former Penn State quarterback and State Media host Christian Hackenberg is retaining the faith.
“Don’t know about that! Hold strong!!!!!!!” Hackenberg responded to Travis.
Interim head coach Terry Smith will lead Penn State into Ohio State on Saturday at noon.
The Nittany Lions are 3-4 and haven’t won a Power 4 game this season. Penn State will play No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Indiana, the top two teams in the Big Ten and country, in back-to-back weeks. Penn State is 19.5-point underdogs against the Buckeyes.
