Penn State’s recruiting fallout continues in the post-James Franklin era.
The Nittany Lions have lost their entire 2027 class, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Much of the upcoming class of 2026 has either decommitted or opened their recruitment, while remaining open to attending Penn State. Most are evaluating their options.
On Monday, another player joined the long line of decommitted players. According to Rivals, three-star safety Darrell Carey has decommitted from Penn State.
Carey committed to PSU in April and hails from prestigious DeMatha Catholic High School, known for producing NFL players like Chase Young and Brian Westbrook.
The Washington, D.C. native is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound defensive back that 247Sports describes as the No. 28 safety recruit in the nation. Pittsburgh’s own four-star safety Matt Sieg (Fort Cherry), is also evaluating his options and visited Pitt over the weekend.
Carey’s 247Sports Crystal Ball Prediction is that he will attend nearby Maryland. He holds 22 offers and is scheduled to visit Maryland on Halloween. Carey committed to Penn State on April 18.
Moving on from Franklin created a hectic, but rather predictable shakeup to the recruiting world, but it isn’t exclusive to Penn State. Premiere programs Florida (Billy Napier) and LSU (Brian Kelly) both fired their head coaches in the past two weeks. This year marks the most head coaches fired during the season in college football history.
Interim head coach and significant recruiting coordinator Terry Smith is leading the program for the remainder of the season. Whoever Penn State’s next coach is will have to pick up the pieces. It would make sense to retain Smith as well, a good football coach and Penn State alum, to solidify recruits and player retention from the current roster to the Penn State program.
