After losing his last NCAA Wrestling Championships match this past Saturday, Cornell’s Meyer Shapiro made some interesting comments.
Shapiro, who was the No. 2 seed, fell in the winners bracket to Nebraska’s Antrell Taylor— who eventually won the national title— and then to Penn State’s Tyler Kasak, who was seeded first.
Shapiro also competed just a month after he was in a coma. He beat No. 7 Vinny Zerban (Northern Colorado) in the quarterfinals and after losing to Taylor in the semis, beat No. 5 Brandon Cannon (Ohio State) to secure All-America status.
But what Shapiro said moments after his tournament ended is sure to make headlines.
“As much as I want to wrestle (at) 165, I could be a (one hundred) 49-pounder for all I wanted to be,” Shapiro said. “Some guys, if they’re taking steroids or they’re not taking steroids, wink wink.”
After this, Shapiro pointed out the presence of Cornell athletic director Dr. Nicki Moore.
“It’s just crazy, you know, I’m grateful that I, there’s our athletic director, right there. How you doin?”

Of course, these comments are cryptic and there’s no way of knowing who specifically Shapiro was referring to, if anybody.
Many have weighed in, however, including members of the Iowa wrestling family.

Shapiro is now a two-time All-American and has two seasons of eligibility left.
He’s set to be a force next season, whether it’s at 157 or elsewhere. If he’s at 157, he and Kasak will be in the national title picture again next season.
If Shapiro moves up to 165, he’ll be in the same class as Penn State’s reigning national champ, Mitchell Mesenbrink.
