As expected, Penn State wrestling star Mitchell Mesenbrink has advanced to the Big Ten Championship bout, and he’ll be taking on a familiar foe for the title.
Mesenbrink tech-falled Michigan’s Beau Mantanona, responding from Mantanona getting a takedown within the first 10 seconds.
He ended up beating Mantanona, 25-8.
This makes 16 tech falls for Mesenbrink out of 18 matches, not counting forfeits, of which three have been three. The most recent came earlier Saturday, when Ohio State’s Paddy Gallagher took a medical default in what would have been the quarterfinal bout against Mesenbrink.
When Mesenbrink finally did get to wrestle in Evanston, it was business as usual.
Mesenbrink will now take on No. 2 Mikey Caliendo of Iowa. Despite Caliendo being No. 2 in the country at 165, Mesenbrink has his number.
He’s 4-0 against Caliendo with two tech falls and three bonus point wins.
The final session of this year’s Big Ten Championships is scheduled to begin at 5:30 ET Sunday afternoon.
