It’s been an interesting semifinal round for Penn State wrestling so far, to say the least.
PSU started Saturday night on the right end of an upset, with true freshman Luke Lilledahl upsetting No. 1 Matt Ramos (Purdue) via major decision in the semifinals.
Then, Penn State started to be on the wrong end of upsets.
First, No. 1 Beau Bartlett (141) fell to Minnesota’s Vance VomBaur. Then, at 149, Shayne Van Ness fell to Illinois’ Kannon Webster — whom he majored in the regular season— 4-2, with Webster getting a last-second takedown.
Both Van Ness and Bartlett are now into the consolation bracket, where they’ll try to get third in their respective weight classes. The good news for both of them is that nationals are on the horizon.
