University Park— One Penn State wrestling star who’s been banged up for the past month didn’t wrestle against American Friday night, another did and coach Cael Sanderson explained why after the 50-3 win.

71: Pins, Star Seniors Propel Penn State Wrestling to a Big Regular-Season Finale

Braeden Davis has been banged up for almost a month and will end February with only two matches over the month.

Tyler Kasak got hurt Super Bowl Sunday and didn’t wrestle in a dual meet for almost two weeks after.

Some fans may have guessed that either both would wrestle against American or both would sit.

Instead, Davis sat and Kasak got a first-period pin.

Here was Cael’s thinking.

WHAT CAEL SAID

Here’s what Sanderson said about why Davis didn’t wrestle and Kasak did.

“With Braeden it’s just precautionary,” he told reporters. “With Kasak, he just… any kind of an injury like that, they go through the trainer and the doctor. So they have a protocol to follow and he followed it. He was clear and ready to roll and he looked pretty dang good.”

AIN’T NO GRAVE

Tyler Kasak loves Johnny Cash and Penn State wrestling fans love him

Tyler Kasak celebrates his win over Iowa’s Jacori Teemer.

Kasak’s entrance song is “Ain’t no Grave” by Johnny Cash.

It’s a great song and Kasak has proven to be a great wrestler for Penn State over the past two seasons.

Last year, he had to step in at 149 due to a season-ending injury to starter Shayne Van Ness.

All he did as a true freshman was finish in third-place at nationals, doing so after losing his first bout of the tournament and winning seven straight.

Now, he has a shot to win it all at 157 both in the Big Ten and National Championships.

The Big Ten Championships are scheduled for March 8-9 in Evanston, Illinois.
