Oumar Ballo scored a team-high 20 points (12 rebounds and five assists) as Indiana (17-11, Big Ten 8-9) outscored Penn State 25-15 over the final ย 9:30 to win at the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall Wednesday.
Trey Galloway scored 16 points (nine assists and two steals), while Mackenzie Mgbacko (13), Myles Rice (13) and Luke Goode (10) combined for 36 points in the 83-78 win.
Penn State (15-14, Big Ten 5-13) was led by Ace Baldwin Jr.’s 22 points (five rebounds, five assists and five steals). Yanic Konan Niederhauser contributed 16 points (seven rebounds and two blocks) as four other Nittany Lions had 10 points.
Overall, Penn State shot 53% from the field and 39% from 3. Indiana shot 57% from the field and 67% from deep.
FIRST HALF
Penn State grabbed a five-point lead at the 9:10 mark after running off 10 unanswered points. After that, the scoring was nearly even as PSU edged Indiana 20-17 for the remainder of the half to take a 39-37 lead at the intermission. Both teams finished shooting nearly identical, as the Nittany Lions made 16-of-25 (64%) and the Hoosiers made 15-of-25 (60%).
SECOND HALF
The even play from both sides continued up to the under-12 media timeout of the second half. Indiana was outscoring Penn State 16-14, and both teams were 10-for-20. Baldwin Jr. gave Penn State a five-point lead (63-58) after three free throws, but Indiana responded with a 17-6 run to earn a 75-69 lead at the 4:51 mark. The Hoosiers would lead the rest of the way.
TURNING POINT
After Yanic Konan Niederhauser split a pair of free throws to make it 75-73 Indiana, Myles Rice went on a personal 5-0 run to give the Hoosiers an eight-point lead.
