University Park— Penn State fans knew their team would beat Kent State and knew it wouldn’t the close.
Kent State came into Happy Valley 0-3 with two of their losses being by a combined 102 points and the other being to FCS St. Francis at home.
Still, PSU fans probably weren’t breaking on the school to break the program record for total yardage in a game.
Against Susquehanna in 1926, PSU went off for 711 yards in an 82-0 win. For context, this game took place almost three months before Joe Paterno was born. Through all the great offenses Penn State’s had— 1992, ‘94 and 2016 come to mind— no team had ever reached 711.
Per Mike Poorman of StateCollege.com, this changed Saturday.
Penn State Football, in its 135th season, set 2 all-time offensive records in a 56-0 win vs. Kent State in Beaver Stadium:
Total Offense
New record: 718 yds.
Old record: 711 vs. Susquehanna, 1926 (82-0)First Downs
New Record: 40
Old Record: 38 vs. West Virginia, 1962 (34-6)— Mike Poorman (@PSUPoorman) September 21, 2024
Penn State had eight players score touchdowns in a 56-0 win, picking up 718 yards to break the mark.
Yes, it was against Kent State, who is now 0-4 with its three losses to FBS schools being by a combined 144 points, but it’s still the most balanced stat line from Penn State’s receivers in a while.
Penn State got the scoring started when Drew Allar hit Tyler Warren for a 16-yard TD.
Warren then hit Nicholas Singleton for a 17-yard touchdown pass to put PSU ahead by two scores.
Penn State added to its lead on a 14-yard pass from Allar to Liam Clifford for Clifford’s first career touchdown reception.
A five-yard TD run by Drew Allar effectively put the game to bed.
The first drive of the second half took just 1:47, ending on a 59-yard pass from Drew Allar to Omari Evans.
It gets much tougher for Penn State next week. PSU takes on No. 24 Illinois, who moved to 4-0 by upsetting No. 22 Nebraska on the road Friday night in overtime. That game is Homecoming, and it’s set to kick off at either 7 or 7:30.
