Big Ten football will have a new look this season with the arrivals of Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington.
In the crazy climate and ever-changing world of college athletics, could the Big Ten be looking to add even more teams?
It’s not secret about the unhappiness of Florida State in the ACC, with the two sides currently battling things out in court.
Florida State is looking for a better financial situation in a different conference. But is anyone interested in them?
College football insider Brett McMurphy from Action Network is reporting that “Florida State likely will not have a spot in the Big Ten or SEC if it’s successful in leaving the ACC and the ACC stays intact.”
Big Ten, SEC unlikely to add Florida State if it leaves ACC & ACC survives, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ. Big Ten & SEC don’t want FSU because adding FSU doesn’t make financial sense, no desire to expand & “they’ve been a disruptive partner,” sources said https://t.co/YhOPDC3O1k

McMurphy gives two reasons for this: 1) doesn’t make financial sense for either league. 2) and this is an interesting one, “FSU has shown it’s not a good partner.”
Another McMurphy source added, ““Look what they did: getting the attorney general involved, accusing [former ACC commissioner] John Swofford of rigging the television rights to help his son, filing a suit to expose ESPN’s TV deals — something the other three power leagues are against, by the way,” the source said. “They’re not a good partner. There’s no congeniality. No one wants that.”
A source tells McMurphy that the Big Ten is happy with where it is but adds that could change if the ACC no longer exists.
“If the ACC blows up, who picks first (between the Big Ten and SEC)? Who picks second? If there is a need and desire to expand, you take inventory, so your competitors don’t get it. But the presidents and chancellors are looking for stability. Despite what the social media geniuses are suggesting, no one – the leagues, the networks – is driving expansion.”
If the ACC were to blow up, schools such as North Carolina and Virginia would likely be more valuable to the SEC and Big Ten than Florida State.
