For Penn State’s schedule, we know that Penn State and West Virginia will open their respective 2024 seasons in late August.
But we don’t know the date or time for the game yet.
Logic indicates the date will be Aug. 31, since that’s been the tentative date for some time.
There’s theoretically a chance that the game could be moved up to Thursday, Aug. 29 but history would be against that. Both Penn State and West Virginia opened up their 2022 seasons against separate opponents on Thursday night, and that change was announced well before the end of May. So, yeah, PSU-WVU will be Saturday, Aug. 31.
The next question is: What time?
The favorite here appears to be Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff.”
Since it’s a Big 12 home game, it won’t be on CBS or NBC, which have rights to Big Ten games.
It could be on ESPN, but “the worldwide leaders has games scheduled for 3:30 (Colorado State-Texas) and 7 (Alabama-Western Kentucky).
That leaves “Big Noon,” and for multiple reasons, that’s the favorite to land Penn State-West Virginia.
For one, there aren’t a ton of Power 4 matchups Week 1 in general. This would be a game that checks that box and also is a regional matchup, a welcome sight for old school fans. Both teams are coming off winning seasons, combining to go 19-7 last year, and Fox is capable of broadcasting Big Ten and Big 12 games.
Whether it’s at noon or, for some reason, another time, we’ll find out for sure when the Big 12 announces its Week 1 gametimes at 2:30 ET Thursday. Penn State beat West Virginia 38-15 under the Beaver Stadium lights in last year’s first game in the schedule.
