Penn State Wrestling Loses Commitment From In-State Star

Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson and football coach James Franklin have developed a bond over the past decade, and that bond has led to Sanderson speaking to the football team.

Penn State wrestling has lost a commitment from its 2024 Class.

Mason Gibson, a star at Bishop McCourt who committed to Penn State late last November, announced via X (formerly Twitter) Thursday afternoon that he’s withdrawn his commitment from Penn State and is reopening his recruitment.

“I would like to thank Penn State for their understanding,” Gibson wrote, “and for ending this on good terms.”

Gibson, whose older brother, Erik, wrapped up his first season at Penn State this past winter, had initially been commitment to Cornell along with his brother. But the two decided to stay in-state and wrestle for the great Cael Sanderson.

Mason Gibson finished his high school career a Bishop McCourt this winter with a 72-10 record. As a true freshman, he went 21-1 at 120-pounds and won the section, district and regional championships before finishing second at states. Gibson’s next two seasons were plagued by injury. He missed all of 2021-22 and only wrestled six times in 2022-23. None of those six bouts were in the postseason. Finally healthy this past season, Gibson went 47-7 and won his second district and regional championships. At states, he made it to the semifinal round where he fell to eventual champion Charlie Robson of Conwell-Egan. Gibson then lost his consolation match to finish in fourth.

Gibson most recently competed at 133 for McCourt and FloWrestling projects him to compete at that class when he starts his college career.

Days before Gibson’s de-commitment, Penn State wrestling got some good news. Beau Bartlett, who was this year’s national runner-up at 141, announced his decision to return to Penn State and thus use his last season of college eligibility.
