Penn State in the NFL

Was it a great move or ‘horrible decision’ that Steelers drafted Pat Freiermuth?

Graphic from Pittsburgh Steelers

Ready for some great debate? The Pittsburgh Steelers took Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth in the second round with the 55th overall pick in the NFL draft. While Freiermuth is an excellent prospect with a lot of upside, there is the question of whether picking him was a good move by the Steelers.

The Black & Gold still had a lot of holes to fill at that spot in the draft, particularly on the offensive line, and yet picked a tight end instead of filling one of the major holes.

The guys at our sister sites SteelersNow.com debated this topic live Friday night on Pittsburgh Sports Live. Cale Berger, in real time, threw out the possibility of selecting Freiermuth moments before the pick came in and said it would be a “horrible decision.”

Once the pick was in, Berger stood by his initial analysis and still said if was a bad decision by the Steelers. Mike Asti and Nick Farabaugh weigh in with their thoughts during this outstanding discussion.

You can see the full debate below. And for good measure, I made a separate appearance on Pittsburgh Sports Live with Alan Saunders from Steelers Now and said I absolutely love the pick, both from a Penn State journalist’s standpoint and as a Steelers fan.
