Penn State All 105: Xxavier Thomas’ Rapport With Terry Smith

Photo by Nathan Breisinger, Nittany Sports Now: Xxavier Thomas

This is one in a series of stories breaking down each of the players on Penn State Football’s 2026 roster.

Xxavier Thomas came to Penn State because of cornerbacks coach Terry Smith, the program’s Western Pennsylvania recruiting guru and former interim head coach. Since Smith stayed with the Nittany Lions through their coaching change, it makes sense that Thomas stayed, too.

A 5-foot-11, 180 pound cornerback, Thomas likely fits best as a slot corner with potential upside on the boundary. He attended Pittsburgh’s Central Catholic high school, earning a four-star rating as a recruit from 247Sports, and made a series of deep playoff runs with the Vikings.

Thomas appeared in one game for Penn State last season and, while the team has a crowded depth chart at cornerback ahead of him, including a pair of senior starters retained from last season, his rapport with Smith could turn into a path to playing time.

High School: Thomas played at Pittsburgh Central Catholic, one of the commonwealth’s premier 6-A programs, and intercepted six passes as a senior. A strong athlete, Thomas also participated on the basketball and track teams.

PENN STATE

Where he stands: Thomas appeared in one game for Penn State last season and didn’t record any statistics. His rapport with Smith, who stayed on as the Nittany Lions’ cornerbacks coach, associate head coach and defensive recruiting coordinator after stepping down from his interim role last season, could help him earn snaps in a room packed with 12 cornerbacks.

Expect Zion Tracy and Audavion Collins to start at cornerback, as they did last season, but Thomas could begin to carve out playing time in the slot, on special teams, or as a reserve. His compact frame would fit well in the slot, perhaps the fastest path to the field.

A quote by Thomas: “They offered me, and I committed on the spot.” — Xxavier Thomas to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review following his commitment.

A quote about Thomas: “He’s probably the most dynamic returner I’ve been around in my coaching career. He has a knack for it and a natural ability. You really can’t coach that.” — Central Catholic coach Ryan Lehmeier to the Tribune-Review.
