A Penn State transfer is staying in that nation’s premier wrestling conference.
Monday night, Nebraska fans were happy when Lucas Cochran, who spent five seasons with PSU, announced via Instagram that he was becoming a Cornhusker.
Although Cochran most recently wrestled at heavyweight, HuskerOnline reported that he’s expected to cut down to 184, where Nebraska needs a new starter after losing Silas Allred (graduation) and Ty Eise (transfer).
Cochran split his time at Penn State wrestling at 197 and heavyweight, finishing with a 36-8 record in all competitions.
The most notable win came in February 2024 at the Bryce Jordan Center against Rutgers.
With Penn State’s regular heavyweight, Greg Kerkvliet, out with an illness, Cochran, who had been competing at 197, moved up to wrestle a top 10 heavyweight in Rutgers’ Yaraslau Slavikouski. Not only did Cochran hold his own, he won, beating Slavinkouski 7-3 to close out the dual meet.
Cochran continued to compete at 197 the next season and went 4-0 with a 100% bonus rate.
The next year, he moved up to heavyweight, where he competed for the starting spot with Kerkvliet being out of eligibility. Cole Mirasola ended up starting for Penn State, and Cochran didn’t wrestle any bouts during the season.
With Cael Sanderson’s wrestling empire having won 13 of the past 15 national titles— including the last five, which Cochran was a part of— talented wrestlers have been blocked from the starting lineup, and Cochran was one of them.
In the past two years, Terrell Barraclough and David Evans each became All-Americans after transferring from Penn State to Utah Valley.
It’s yet to be confirmed whether Nebraska will be on Penn State’s schedule next season, but the two usually face each other.
