Krystal McKenna, the mother of Penn State men’s hockey star Gavin McKenna, might not be a front-runner for Mother of the Year after a new charge surfaced in Centre County.
According to a criminal docket filed April 29, McKenna has been charged with selling or furnishing liquor to minors. The alleged offense occurred Jan. 31 in State College, the same date Gavin McKenna was charged with felony aggravated assault after an alleged altercation in downtown State College, according to court documents.
Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 3 at 8:30 a.m.
Gavin McKenna, widely projected as the No. 1 overall pick in this summer’s NHL Draft, has already seen the most serious charge against him dropped. His felony aggravated assault charge was dismissed, though a misdemeanor simple assault charge and other summary charges remain ongoing.
For Penn State, the situation adds another off-ice wrinkle involving one of the most talented players in program history. Gavin McKenna’s freshman season turned him into a national name, but the legal headlines surrounding Jan. 31 have continued well beyond the final horn.
As always, both cases remain pending until resolved in court.
