A little harmless fun isn’t a bad thing.
Thursday night, the Penn State football social media account posted a tweet that was a playful jab at ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Here’s what happened.
Earlier in the evening, Schefter reported that Penn State RB Nicholas Singleton, who broke his foot at the Senior Bowl in February, had been medically cleared to resume running. Overall, it was a pretty basic news story, and good news for Singleton and Penn State fans.
There was just one problem.
Instead of the tweet being accompanied by a photo of Singleton, Schefter’s account tweeted a photo of another Penn State back.
Most fans assumed it was KiJana Carter or Blair Thomas, who both wore No. 32.
Instead, it was Cordell Mitchell, who played at Penn State from 1996-99, rushing for 998 yards and four touchdowns on 202 carries.
The account quickly caught the mistake and posted another tweet with a photo of Singleton, but the Penn State football Twitter account decided to have some fun.
Multiple other accounts got in on it as well.
All kidding aside, Singleton is one of the best backs in Penn State history.
By the end of his career, Singleton was fourth all-time on the school’s rushing list and accomplished this while splitting carries with Kaytron Allen for all four years.
Singleton also holds the school record for rushing touchdowns (45) and total touchdowns (54), breaking both marks, previously held by Saquon Barkley, during his last game against Rutgers in late November.
Singleton went out with a bang, torching Rutgers for 183 total yards in a 40-36 win that ensured bowl eligibility for Penn State.
The Mock Draft Database has Singleton as a fourth-round pick, ranking him as the No. 139 overall prospect.
