Mitchell Mesenbrink has won just about everything there is to win in collage wrestling.
In the past calendar year, he became a Big Ten champ for the second time, an NCAA champion for the first time and a World Champion, contributing to Penn State coach Cael Sanderson’s wrestling empire.
But Mesenbrink reveled in his post-match interview with the Big Ten Network that he hadn’t been happy during that run.
Mesenbrink didn’t get to specific as far as when things began to turn around for him from an emotional standpoint, but he did confirm that he’s in a better place.
“I know what fulfills me in life now,” he said. “This past year, I won a lot of the things that I wanted to win, and I realized I was the most unhappy that I’ve ever been. I think that this shows… I know that this isn’t going to fulfill me, and I know that winning something or any amount of money or whatever isn’t going to fulfill me. I know that’s God and I’m Catholic so I’m going to say. Jesus Christ, that’s what’s going to fulfill me. Now I’m just a tool for that. Whatever God’s plan is.”
Mesenbrink was then asked what the key will be for him repeating as a national champ two weeks from now in Cleveland, where Penn State wrestling will have all 10 starters competing.
“Free,” he said. “It’s the same thing. When your why is clearly defined for yourself, then you can be fearless and go get it. I appreciate all my opponents and the fun that we can go out and wrestle hard, but I want to be free. And the biggest thing… if I’m not enjoying it, why would I do it? So I want to enjoy it and have fun. That’s my main goal.”
