It appears that a young Penn State defender will be missing time with an injury.

On an interview with Fox Sports Radio, LaVar Arrington said that his son, LaVar II, “had a little setback” and “had to get his knee cleaned up.”

Penn State HC Matt Campbell hadn’t mentioned Arrington during training camp. It’s unclear how long he’ll be out.

Arrington is in his second season at Penn State and his first at defensive end, starting his career at linebacker.

He appeared in seven games for the Nittany Lions as a true freshman in 2025. Arrington mostly played on special teams. Arrington also earned praise from his coaching staff for the effort he showed in practice, earning a pair of Developmental Squad Player of the Week honors.

In an exclusive interview with Nittany Sports Now over the summer, Campbell described Arrington as a “huge part of our football team,” and in the spring, he talked about what he sees from him as a player.

“I think what I love about LaVar, you know, I got to watch, I don’t know, four or five bowl practices, and you got to watch his reps, and then you’ll watch him in his special teams reps last year,” Campbell said when asked Tuesday about Arrington’s offseason progress and his weight.

“You watch him run down on kickoff, and some of the plays he makes, he’s explosive and he’s dynamic. His first couple steps are, you know, what I would say are, like, ‘wow’ moments.”

Penn State opens the 2026 season Saturday, Sept. 5 against Marshall at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 on FS1.
