Penn State running back Tikey Hayes will return to the Nittany Lions for the 2026 season, Hayes announced Wednesday.
The Aliquippa, PA native appeared in just one game during the 2025 season, recording three carries for 18 yards in Penn State’s Pinstripe Bowl victory over Clemson.
Hayes arrived in State College last December and practiced with the team during its College Football Playoff run.
He quickly made a positive impression on coaches and teammates, momentum that carried into spring practice.
At one point, Hayes was viewed internally as a potential No. 3 running back behind veterans Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton.
Hayes again flashed his ability during preseason camp, though many within the program felt Hayes needed core development both on and off the field before he could consistently crack the rotation.
Penn State’s running back room has seen notable movement this offseason.
Quinton Martin, another Pittsburgh-area product from Belle Vernon, announced his return for 2026 last week, while the Lions also landed transfer commitments from former Iowa State back Carson Hansen and former Ohio State tailback James Peoples.
A standout at Aliquippa, Hayes was integral in their 2023 state championship.
Despite missing time as a senior, he rushed for 1,120 yards and 10 touchdowns in just five games. He finished his prep career with more than 7,000 rushing yards and 95 touchdowns, earning three Fab 22 selections from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
