The Baltimore Ravens have traded a former Penn State edge rusher to the opposite side of the nation.
On Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Baltimore dealt linebacker Odafe Oweh and a 2027 7th-round pick (via the Los Angeles Rams) to the Los Angeles Chargers. LA is receiving safety Alohi Gilman and a 2026 5th-round pick.
Oweh, 26, is in the final year of his contract, and the trade saves the Ravens roughly $8 million against the NFL salary cap.
In five games (two starts) this season, Oweh owns 10 tackles and one tackle for loss. He didn’t record a sack or forced fumble playing for the 31st-ranked defense (416.6 yards) in the league.
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh dealt Oweh to his brother Jim Harbaugh, who coached against Oweh and Penn State while at Michigan.
The former Nittany Lion was a first-round pick – 31st overall – in the 2021 NFL Draft. Oweh had his 5th-year option picked up after steadily improving with the Ravens.
2024 was Oweh’s best year, recording a career high 10 sacks and nine tackles for loss.
In 67 games (25 starts) over five seasons, Oweh owns 23 sacks, 26 tackles for loss, 66 quarterback hits, seven forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.
Oweh made a name for himself at Penn State from 2018-2020. He earned seven sacks and 14 tackles for loss while playing defensive end for James Franklin. Oweh forced two fumbles and earned one pass defended in 2019, his only full season at PSU.
Oweh only played in four games as a freshman. His 2020 Covid-season was cut short to seven games in a season that PSU finished 4-5.
He declared for the draft as a redshirt sophomore and became a solid contributor in Baltimore’s defense.
The Chargers do not play the Ravens this season, but are 3-2. The Ravens are gashed by injuries, and it’s somewhat surprising to see them trade Oweh. Baltimore is 1-4 and plays the Rams before their bye.
