Penn State freshman forward Gavin McKenna played a pivotal role in helping Team Canada capture the bronze medal at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship, capping the tournament with a 6–3 victory over Finland on Monday night.
With the medal, McKenna becomes the third Nittany Lion to earn hardware at the World Juniors. He joins Aarne Talvitie, who captained Finland to gold in 2019, and Evan Barratt, who earned silver with Team USA after falling in that same 2019 gold medal game.
McKenna was one of the tournament’s standout performers and consistently rose to the moment in key games.
He was named Player of the Game twice: first after a dominant hat trick against Denmark during the preliminary round, and again in the bronze medal game after posting a four-point performance that included one goal and three assists.
The Whitehorse, Yukon native recorded at least one point in all seven games, finishing second in tournament scoring with 14 points on four goals and 10 assists.
He trailed linemate Michael Hage by just one point for the scoring lead.
McKenna’s 14 points are tied for the seventh-most by a draft-eligible player in World Junior Championship history and rank as the fourth-highest total by a draft-eligible Canadian.
Fellow WHL alum Connor Bedard holds the Canadian record with 23 points in 2023, while Sweden’s Peter Forsberg owns the overall tournament record with 31 points in 1993.
McKenna is expected to rejoin Penn State later this week as the Nittany Lions prepare for a Big Ten series against Minnesota at Pegula Ice Arena. Puck drops Friday night at 6 PM (Eastern).
