We now know where Penn State will be playing in its bowl game and who it will be playing against.
Greg Pickel of Blue-White Illustrated reported early Saturday afternoon that Penn State is going to the Pinstripe Bowl, which is scheduled for Dec. 27 at noon in Yankee Stadium.
Pittsburgh Sports Now reported that Pinstripe Bowl officials have decided on Penn State-Clemson.
Going back to August, many would have pegged Penn State-Clemson as a potential College Football Playoff matchup, maybe even a national title game. Penn State entered the campaign ranked No. 2 in the AP poll, and Clemson was No. 4.
But by the time the first College Football Playoff rankings were announced, both Penn State and Clemson were out of the picture.
Penn State’s downfall was much more publicized because it led to the firing of James Franklin in the middle of his 12th season as head coach.
Clemson still has Dabo Swinney, who is in Year 17. Swinney– winner of two national championships, nine ACC titles and three national Coach of the Year awards– has never coached against Penn State, and the history between Penn State and Clemson is limited.
The teams have only played against each other one time– the 1987 Citrus Bowl. Clemson won that game, 35-10.
Leading up to the bowl game, people will monitor which Penn State players will play and which will opt out. Additionally, new head coach Matt Campbell will likely have filled out much, if not all, of his staff by Dec. 27, so how many of Penn State’s coaches will work the game? We will find out soon enough.
