Penn State men’s ice hockey could soon be getting a key contributor back as it gears up for a second-half push.
Head coach Guy Gadowsky appeared on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast and provided an update on right wing Aiden Fink, who has missed significant time this season.
“Aiden broke his thumb very early in the season,” Gadowsky said. “He’s missed about half the games.”
Gadowsky added that Fink is nearing a return.
“So Aiden’s coming back. He’s coming with us to the Spengler Cup, so he’s going to get his feet under him.”
Fink suffered the broken thumb on a slash against Ohio State in October.
His absence has also impacted linemate Gavin McKenna, who has been forced to shuffle through multiple line combinations.
“Gavin’s been playing with a bunch of different guys,” Gadowsky said. “He really hasn’t had a solid line.”
Fink has recorded two goals and seven assists for nine points this season, giving him 96 career points. He currently ranks ninth on Penn State’s all-time scoring list, just seven points shy of Liam Folkes ’20 for eighth.
The junior is also closing in on another milestone. Fink is pursuing 100 career points in as few as 82 total games, which would make him the fastest Nittany Lion to reach the mark. The current record is held by Alex Limoges, who reached 100 points in his 102nd career game.
At the time of his injury, Fink’s nine points were tied for eighth in the Big Ten and 17th nationally, while his seven assists ranked fourth in the conference prior to his injury.
