One of Penn State’s impactful true freshman contributors will not be returning in 2026.
Edge rusher Chaz Coleman will enter the transfer portal after one year in Happy Valley, according to Pete Nakos of On3.
Nakos reported that new head coach Matt Campbell and the Penn State staff pushed to keep Coleman and made him a “top priority.” He said Penn State was “willing to pay” Coleman, who is opting to explore his options.
Coleman confirmed the news on social media on Thursday, saying that he is going to “pursue other opportunities.”
After much thought and consideration, I have decided to enter the transfer portal this coming January to pursue other opportunities,” Coleman said on Twitter. “I’d like thank James Franklin and his staff for believing in me and teaching me what it means to believe in myself.”
A 6-foot-4, 246-pound disrupter on the edge who showed flashes this season, Coleman recovered eight tackles, three tackles for loss, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and one sack in nine games.
The decision doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but a big loss for the future of PSU’s defense.
Coleman was named a True Freshman Midseason All-American by On3 was greenlit to burn his redshirt early in the year. Coleman has three years of eligibility remaining and picked Penn State over Michigan State and Kentucky.
The portal opens on January 2 and will run through January 16.
