When Penn State Pat Kraft met privately with a group of approximately 10 players to gather feedback during Penn State’s coaching search, the conversation was intended to remain confidential.
Instead, raw and candid audio from that meeting was leaked to a YouTube channel, creating an unexpected distraction.
One of the players who participated in the meeting said the decision to make the audio public revealed a deeper issue within Penn State’s football culture following a turbulent 2025 season.
For King Mack, what initially appeared to be an isolated breach of trust instead exposed broader concerns about leadership and accountability within the locker room.
Penn State entered the season ranked No. 2 in the preseason but spiraled into a six-game losing streak, culminating in a highly visible coaching change. According to Mack, the collapse highlighted fractures in unity, focus, and responsibility that extended beyond on-field performance.
“That shows the lack of leadership and accountability (on the team,)” Mack said. “Anything could have been said in that meeting that could have jeopardized anyone’s future or career. I feel like that’s part of the selfishness and the lack of leadership around the team that we have to fix.”
Mack said new head coach Matt Campbell, who has been on campus for roughly two weeks, has already identified those shortcomings and made clear they will be addressed. Campbell’s early messaging, Mack said, has been direct and uncompromising as he begins reshaping the program’s culture.
“He’s very honest. He’s very straightforward,” Mack said. “He sees where we went wrong this year, and his job is to get it fixed as soon as possible and to use all the seniors as one big group to help us fix all those issues as well. Coach Matt Campbell plans on changing the culture.”
Mack added that a lack of unity and shared purpose played a significant role in Penn State’s struggles. He said Campbell has acknowledged that problem and made it a priority to correct it.
“Not having all 100 people locked in and focused on one thing at one time, it’s hard to be successful when people on your ship aren’t all on one mission,” Mack said. “The fact that [Campbell has] seen that, he said it’s his job to fix that.”
While Mack didn’t say whether Campbell specifically addressed the leaked audio in team meetings, he emphasized Campbell’s firm stance on accountability and commitment.
“We had a team meeting, and he made it very clear,” Mack said. “‘If you don’t want to be here, the door is open. We don’t want anyone here who doesn’t want to be here.’”
