In Penn State coaching search news, a possible candidate for the job suffered an upset loss at home under the lights.
Jeff Brohm and Louisville came into Saturday night’s matchup with 5-4 Cal favored by three scores, ranked No. 14 and right in the thick of the ACC title race.
Although the last part might still be true— Louisville is only a game back in the crazy ACC— the team’s goals took a big hit with an overtime loss.
In most years, this result wouldn’t be prevalent to Penn State in any way. But Brohm is a guy some want to see as Penn State’s next coach.
Regardless of this result, Jeff Brohm is a good coach.
He proved that at Purdue, where he took over a losing program and ended with a winning record in the Big Ten.
He’s proving it at his alma mater, Louisville, now, where he’s 26-10 overall and 16-6 in the ACC. One of the most recent wins was the biggest of Brohn’s career: Beating No. 2 Miami 24-21 on the road.
That win is the latest example of one of Brohm’s strengths, which was also James Franklin’s biggest weakness at Penn State— beating top five teams. Brohm is 4-4 against top five teams over his time at Purdue and Louisville. Franklin, on the other hand, was 1-14 against top five teams at PSU.
With that said, one of Franklin’s biggest strengths at Penn State was beating the teams he was supposed to beat.
Louisville’s loss to Cal was not the type of game Penn State would lose under Franklin.
The Penn State coaching search is far from over. Stay glued to NSN for updates.
