Prugar’s Pros and Cons: Is There a Brohm-ance Brewing For Penn State?

The coaching carousel is at a fever pitch and Penn State is well in the middle of it with its coaching search well underway, so could Jeff Brohm be the next guy?

Less than a year removed from a College Football Playoff Semifinal run, Penn State is in a tailor made position to have success with its coaching hire.

Let’s take a look at some of the candidates and why it makes sense or doesn’t for both the candidate and the program:

Jeff Brohm – Louisville

Jeff Brohm is a late-comer to the Penn State coaching search after beating Miami a few weeks ago. He’s an alum of Louisville where he’s had a multitude of success after coming from Purdue where the struggles were real.

Brohm is without a doubt a football guy:

Pros for Penn State

  • Brohm has won at Louisville and he’s been known as a quarterback developer. That’s  the most enticing thing about bringing Brohm to Penn State
  • Brohm has experience in the Big Ten and knows how to recruit the area.
  • Louisville is an adidas school and there’s familiarity with that, but Penn State going against the grain of what they’d typically do is something to be considered.

Cons for Penn State

  • Brohm was 36-24 in six seasons at Purdue. While Purdue isn’t Penn State, the lack of success is far from ideal in what Pat Kraft is looking for in a head coach.
  • Brohm is a wild card and it’s highly unknown if he’d be able to replicate the success he’s had a Louisville anywhere else.
  • After spending what Kraft and the athletic department has on the buyout for James Franklin, hiring Brohm isn’t the home run hire many hope for in the coaching search.

Pros for Brohm

  • A return to the Big Ten and proving doubters wrong is something many coaches would thrive in.
  • A move back to the Big Ten provides Brohm with a significant raise and access to resources he doesn’t currently have at Louisville.
  • Penn State is already established and is taylormade for success. It would not be a rebuild like he’s had at other stops.

Cons for Brohm

  • Louisville is what Brohm knows and is comfortable with. He’s having a lot of success and ruining a good thing for something completely unknown is not an ideal situation.
  • Brohm knows how difficult winning in the Big Ten is compared to the ACC. When you have a good set up, it’s hard to break away from that.
  • Louisville is Brohm’s alma mater and a place he’s had continued success as both a player and coach. Penn State could easily be a terrible match and that’s a major factor in any decision he would make.

I fully expect Brohm to stay in Louisville and while Central PA is an enticing spot for him to end up.

Kentucky is where he calls home. Louisville will pony up some money and make it worth his while to stay.
