The Penn State men’s basketball team is coming off a 96-87 win over Boston University and hope to continue their winning ways against the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Saturday night.
Sacred Heart, located in Fairfield, Connecticut, comes into Happy Valley with a 2-4 record. The Pioneers compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). They have wins against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (103-46) and Holy Cross (79-66). They are coming off an overtime loss against Central Connecticut State (106-108) and have also losses to Duquesne (80-92), Villanova (60-94) and Queens University of Charlotte (64-81).
Sacred Heart is led by head coach Anthony Latina, who is in his 13th season at the helm for the Pioneers.
So far this season, 6′-9″ redshirt senior forward, Anquan Hill, has led the Pioneers with 18.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. He is followed by 6′-3″ senior guard, Dashon Gittens, who is scoring 15.6 PPG. and 6′-4″ sophomore guard, Nyle Ralph-Beyer, is registering 10.0 PPG.
Penn State, with a record of 6-1, is currently being led by four Nittany Lions who are averaging double-digit points. Freshmen, Kayden Mingo and Melih Tunca, are averaging 14.4 PPG. and 14.1 PPG. respectively, and junior Freddie Dilione V follows with 13.1 PPG. and senior Josh Reed is at 10.1 PPG.
Penn State and Sacred Heart will meet for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 2009.
The Nittany Lions come into the game leading the country in fewest turnovers per game at (7.1). They also rank top 10 in the country with the fewest fouls per game (13.1 – 7th). The Nittany Lions’ bench points have outscored opponents 236-97 through seven games, which ranks third in the Big Ten and is within the top-50 in the nation.
Saturday night’s game will be televised live on Peacock and on the NBCSN with a tip-off at 6:00 P.M.
