Penn State needs one more win to make it to a bowl game, and only Rutgers is standing in the way.
A few weeks ago, Penn State’s bowling status looked up on the air.
The team was 3-6, hadn’t won in two months and needed to win out to get to .500 and reach bowl eligibility.
Penn State is on the brink of doing exactly that.
It started in East Lansing, when Penn State ended the game on a 21-0 run to beat Michigan State and give Terry Smith his first win as interim coach. The next week was even better.
Back home against Nebraska, Penn State dominated the Huskers to the tune of a 37-10 triumph.
Now, it faces a Rutgers team that, like Penn State, is fighting for bowl eligibility.
IT WOULD BE A FIRST
If Rutgers— which comes in as a two-touchdown underdog— beats Penn State today, it would be the first time that’s happened since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014. The teams have played 10 times since then, and Penn State has won all 10.
The teams also played each other quite a bit before Rutgers joined the Big Ten, with PSU winning 22 of the first 24 meetings.
The last time Rutgers beat PSU was 1988.
Rutgers’ only other win over Penn State was in 1918. Both of Rutgers’ wins against Penn State were in State College. It’s never happened in Piscataway.
