University Park, PA – Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen continue their assault on the school record book by passing a pair of Nittany Lion legends.
Singleton passed Lydell Mitchell for No. 9 all time and Larry Johnson for No. 8 on his first two carries of the game.
Singleton on Penn State’s first drive ran for nine yards on his first carry to pass Mitchell.
On Penn State’s second drive, Singleton ran for 16 yards to pass Johnson
Allen’s 20-yard rush on Penn State’s second drive pushed him past Mitchell. Allen would later pass Johnson 0n Penn State’s first drive in the second quarter on a 12-yard carry.
Mitchell rushed for 2,934 yards between 1969-1971, teamed up with future Pro Football Hall of Fame fullback for the Pittsburgh Steelers Franco Harris.
In 1971, Mitchell had one of the finest seasons in Penn State history when he set an NCAA record with 29 total touchdowns (26 rush, 3 receiving), which was broken by Oklahoma State’s Barry Sanders in 1988.
Johnson rushed for 2,953 yards between 1999-2002, winning the Maxwell, Doak Walker, Jim Brown, and Walter Camp Awards in 2002.
During the 2002 season, Johnson became the first Nittany Lion to rush for 2,000 yards in a single season with 2,087 while averaging 7.7 yards per carry.
Next up for Singleton and Allen on the all-time rushing list is D.J. Dozier, who ran for 3,227 yards between 1983 and 1986.
