During his weekly press conference Monday, Penn State coach James Franklin commented on former DC Brent Pry’s firing at Virginia Tech.
College football can be a thrilling, but brutal industry and throws twists and turns that little could possibly see coming.
After starting 0-3 and stumbling in non-conference action, Virginia Tech fired head coach Brent Pry.
Report: Former Penn State Assistant Brent Pry Will be Fired by Virginia Tech
With losses to Vanderbilt, South Carolina and a stunning home defeat to Old Dominion, the Hokies decided it was time for a change after less than four years.
Pry coached under Franklin at Penn State from 2014 to 2021. Franklin hired Pry as part of his inaugural coaching staff, bringing him over from Vanderbilt.
“A challenging situation. You’d hate to see it for anybody,” Franklin said during his weekly press conference on Monday. “I hate to see it for Brent, and hate to see it for Virginia Tech.”
The Altoona, Pa, native joined the Nittany Lions as an assistant head coach/co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach in 2014 and served as the primary defensive coordinator from 2016 to 2021.
“But Brent is resilient, he’s a darn good football coach, and he’ll bounce back,” Franklin said. “I know he will.”
Pry finished his Virginia Tech career 16-24. The Hokies defeated Tulane 41-20 in the Military Bowl during the 2023 campaign, but lost the Duke’s Mayo Bowl to Minnesota, 24-10, during their two bowl appearances under Pry.
James Franklin said he and Pry have “texted a bunch,” and he has remained in contact with his friend since Pry was let go.
Penn State hosts Oregon in the biggest game of the season to date, by far, to begin Big Ten play. The Nittany Lions will enter West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium for the 2025 Penn State White Out.
