Katie Schumacher-Cawley was a two-time All-American in women’s volleyball when she was at Penn State from 1998-2001 as well as a women’s basketball player from 2001-2002.
She knows a thing or two about what it takes to be placed on the Mount Rushmore of Penn State athletes, having been a superb one herself as well as a national championship-winning coach.
Legendary Penn State volleyball coach Russ Rose sits far atop her favorite people and is in a land of his own given what he’s meant to her as a mentor and as her former coach.
It’s also important to note she felt there were too many volleyball players to name for a volleyball specific Mount Rushmore.
“I mean obviously coach Rose,” Schumacher-Cawley told NSN. “I mean, for sure, but there were so many players and people that have made an impact on this program, and I’m talking about players that were here in the in the in the 70s and 80s. I just think that there are just too many that I would feel bad. I would leave out some of the big time ones.”
Schumacher-Cawley had quite a few throwback names for her Mount Rushmore:
Matt Suhey – Football – Suhey rushed for 2,818 yards at Penn State before being a second round pick by the Bears in the 1980 NFL Draft.
“Just because he was with the Bears as well and I’m a Chicago girl,” Schmaker-Cawley said.
Susan McConnell-Serio – Women’s Basketball – McConnell-Serio played in 128 games for the Lady Lions basketball team scoring 1,897 points from 1984-1988 before she embarked on a successful playing and coaching career in both the PIAA, NCAA and WNBA.
“She’s a stud,” Schumacher-Cawley said.
Kerry McCoy – Wrestling – McCoy was a three-time All-American for the wrestling team and won the Hodge Trophy in 1997 as the nation’s best wrestler. McCoy is currently the head wrestling coach at Maryland.
“He’s a Penn State OG,” she said. “He was a stud back in the day. He was even before he was here training for the Olympics, when I was actually in school.”
And her final choice for the Penn State Mount Rushmore?
Michael Robinson – Football – Robinson helped return Penn State back to the national conversation while he was a Nittany Lions from 2002-2005. He threw for 2,350 yards and 17 touchdowns while rushing for 806 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2005. Robinson went on to play in the NFL for the San Francisco and Seattle as a fullback.
