Could Penn State be a fit for a Power Four receiver that plans to enter the transfer portal?
Late Tuesday morning, Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reported that Syracuseโs Trebor Pena is โcurrently expected to enter the transfer portal.โ
Pena would be a big get for whoever lands him.
He earned an all-ACC selection last season with 941 yards and nine touchdowns on 84 catches.
It was a breakout season for Pena, who combined for just 271 yards over his first four college football seasons. Penn State needs help at the receiver position, and although it already has some, many feel that one more contributor wouldnโt hurt.
THE WEAKEST LINK
Most would argue that Penn State footballโs weakest link over the past two seasons has been wide receiver, and thereโs plenty of supporting evidence.
In 2023, KeAndre Lambert-Smith led the team in receiving with 673 yards and four touchdowns on 53 receptions. The next leading wideout, Dante Cephas, had just 246 yards.
Both Lambert-Smith and Cephas entered the transfer portal following the season and things only marginally improved in 2024.
Harrison Wallace III was the top dog with 720 yards and four touchdowns on 46 receptions.
Omari Evans was the next best with 415 yards and five touchdowns on 21 catches.
Once again, both receivers entered the portal.
Now, we shall see if things are better in 2025.
IS PENA REALISTIC?
So is Pena a realistic option for Penn State in the transfer portal?
Well, Pete Nakos of On3Sports reported Tuesday morning that the two favorites for Pena as of that writing were Miami and Texas Tech. So, it seems to be long shot at the moment.
But stranger things have happened.
