A former Penn State receiver who entered the transfer portal this winter has found a new home.
Monday afternoon, Mehki Flowers, who spent three seasons at PSU before entering the portal, announced that he had signed with Akron.

Here, Flowers might work with a guy Penn State fans should be familiar with.
Joe Moorhead is— for now— Akron’s head coach. Moorhead’s road at Akron has been a bumpy one. He’s 8-28 through three seasons.
As a result, the guy who helped Penn State’s offense prosper from 2016-17 is routinely linked to Power 4 offensive coordinator openings, such as Ohio State and Virginia Tech.
Regardless of who Akron’s coach is, Flowers will hope to get more playing time there than he did at Penn State. In his three years, Flowers played in a total of 14 games— eight of them in the 2024 season— and mainly played on special teams. Flowers started his run at Penn State as a safety but switched to receiver ahead of the 2024 season. The in-state product from Harrisburg never put up any defensive or offensive stats during his time at Penn State.
Flowers came to Penn State from Central Dauphin East High School in Harrisburg, where he was a four-year captain and a state champion in 2020.
Flowers was named to the All-State team in both 2020 and ‘21 and was a semifinalist for Pennsylvania’s “Mr. Football.”
A four-star recruit, Flowers chose Penn State over schools such as Cincinnati, Kentucky, Nebraska, Pitt, Rutgers, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. He announced his commitment New Year’s Day, 2021. His time at Penn State ended with a transfer portal entry.
Penn State opens its 2025 season against Nevada Aug. 30 at Beaver Stadium.
