The streak is over for Penn State wrestling star Mitchell Mesenbrink.
Not the unbeaten streak, which is still alive and well.
But coming into Friday night, none of Mesenbrink’s first 15 matches went the distance.
13 of his wins were via tech fall and the other two were via forfeit. Finally, in bout No. 16, Michigan’s Beau Mantanona, ranked 10th, went the distance, albeit in a 18-4 loss. A wrestler must win by 15 to get a tech fall.
But Mesenbrink’s bonus point streak is still intact, which is huge for his Hodge Trophy argument. Right now, Mesenbrink is a solid candidate to earn college wrestling’s top individual honor. If Mesenbrink wins the Hodge, he’d be the second straight Penn State wrestler to do so, with Aaron Brooks accomplishing that feat last year.
